ST HD Remix

Might as well get something started about this since I'll be getting a PS3 really just to play this and Street Fighter 4 - both of which are supposedly slated to come out this summer. The place to go for updates about whats currently being tested (HD remix) and how the game has been changed from the original ST is at:

Sirlin posts all the official changes from the capcom blog on his site along with other articles, so you can check either for updates. On sirlin.net, you can filter what posts are displayed by going to the right side of the browser under the "Categories" tab and selecting "Street Fighter HD Remix."

Just another note, I really hope the original ST included with HD Remix is a good port of the arcade version. So far there aren't any good ports of ST since they pretty much all have had problems discovered in them after some tourney (Evo) play. Since Evo2k4, they've been changing the version of ST being used there, from the PS1 anniversary edition, to the dreamcast version, DC, etc. This is another reason why the game is difficult to get into, there isn't a really good port of ST thats being used by everyone.

As far as HD Remix goes... Overall, I'm pretty happy with the changes so far. They are actually really well tested overall because as he mentions most of the tricks and nuances of the game have already been discovered because the game has been played so much.

There are a few links to ST tutorials on his site as well as his book about playing games competitively. Though unfortunately there isn't a lot of information about ST thats easily found. Mostly because its not really a main stream game in the US anymore, but currently the most used emulation of ST is hyper fighter? from the ps2 anniversary edition, I think.

Side note - keep in mind the older more expensive PS3's are backwards compatible, the new cheapest ones (399) are not. I think its the 499 or 599 that is (mine is).

As far as backward compatibility goes...I have no intention of paying another $100 or so so I can play old PS1/PS2 games on the same system. Cause really, I already have a PS2, and if I wanted another, I could buy a new PS2 for less than that (they're around $90 last time I checked) and have it be a lot less hassle than searching around for an old one thats probably used and I have to worry about whether or not someone destroyed the hard drive or not.

The version of ST on Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2 was supposed to be emulated right from the arcade version. Some people claim that it's off, but they're in the small minority. I'm not really sure how something directly emulated can be messed up. Sirlin worked on this project as well.

I think the original ST mode in the HD Remix is there just for pure aesthetics. Remix mode will, and hopefully should be, the new draw for purchasing the game. Supposedly it's slated for Summer 2008.

Info on ST is incredibly sparse. The stuff I've picked up on the game from just a knowledge perspective has taken years to accumulate, over random bits and pieces. Sirlin's tutorial included on CCCV2's version of ST has a lot of good stuff to get someone on to an intermediate level, but doesn't include the really crazy stuff. (And why should it? It's wasted on people who won't be able to apply the knowledge.) The problem with ST that makes it so esoteric to everyone is that the game itself has so many exceptions to its own rules. There are sweeping generalizations, minus in a multitude of scenarios that you must recognize... or die. The assessment of risk vs. reward in the game is incredibly demanding, because you only have a short window of time to make those choices.

In CvS2, or Guilty Gear, or 3S.. hell, even Marvel, you don't find that kind of ambiguity. Marvel is broken, but at least the examples are blatant and well known. ST? Every situation is its own. Crossups, random attacks, character specific combos, what beats what... there's shit in the game the pros just know it works, but not why.
