Though I didn't intend to log this past session, enough happened to warrant a little perspective from Sicarius. Hence, a very brief telling.
[As told from Sicarius' perspective]
And so, we continue wandering around in this mansion looking for more boxes and keys. Osmium and Juno keep standing guard in the many hallways, while Lucia, Shin, and I rummage around the entire place. Tirvan alternates between assisting us and standing guard.
In a large room designed for sparring, we find a box, and Lucia begins to read another one of those riddles aloud.
"Egg," I reply impatiently. Though it is not in my nature to rush things, I am beginning to feel very eager to get back to the underground laboratory to pay its denizens a visit.
And before I do much else, the room is swarming with demonic hounds. We quickly dispatch a few, and then all turns inconveniently dark. While I enjoy the dark very much, it is a little frustrating when I haven't fine-tuned my mental senses to the darkness yet... a bit of a handicap right now. Deciding to stay still, and defend myself the best I can, I manage to fend off a few feeble attempts to bite my arm and feet.
More combat noises resound, and suddenly...
CRASH!
I can see again, and Shin is lying on a door, crushing a hound. I don't know what brutish tactic he used, but it seemed effective enough. A few more kills and darkness spells later, we're standing among piles and piles of canine corpses.
This isn't nearly as satisfying as cutting open something with arms and legs.
We go back to the grind of more boxes, and more riddles, and a while later, we have eight keys for the main door. Just when we do, there's one more gate to pass through, with another keyhole. Cursing silently to myself and wondering where the last key could be, my thoughts are interrupted by shadowy gates opening all around the large foyer, with another small army of those hounds pouring out from them. One particularly big one shows up as well. I wait as Lucia hurls a cone of flame, searing many of the dogs at once. Tirvan turns into a flurry of lightning and begins running into the mix. Good. He can keep them distracted for a while.
The large one dashes right up to us, and Shin lands a very glacing blow to its upper arm. The dog retaliates with a bite right in the chest, sending Shin reeling into the wall, stunned. Osmium snakes out of the shadows and whips the dog in the back with a shadow tendril, quickly dispatching the biggest threat on the field.
This is really disappointing. I continue to fend off the dogs immeidately in front of me, when Tirvan suddenly bursts out with a huge cloud of blades, knocking down over half of the remaining brutes in the room... and Osmium as well. Well, I think to myself, I hope he'll survive that one... I'd like to see if Tirvan survives long enough to apologize, too.
As if we were all distracted by that display, we are suddenly outflanked by the dogs, and I watch Lucia get mauled by the remainder of the pack. Some of the dogs move on and bring Juno down as well - even his metal armor could not prevent him from getting knocked out.
And with a sudden burst of incredible alacrity, I find two more dogs charging up to me just as I am following through with a coup de grace on some of their companions.
Shit.
Two forceful blows strike me right in the abdomen, and I fall to one knee, barely keeping my balance with my sword. I feel my blood chill, and begin gasping for air.
Make them pay.
My vision blurs, and I'm on the brink of losing absolute consciousness for the second time in three days.
Keep going! It is their time, and you are the engine of their oblivion.
My head begins to pulse, and my arms quiver as the cold takes over.
Finish the slaughter!
I find the will, and barely the strength, to get up. The nether wraps itself around me, and the hounds are momentarily confused at my disappearance. Good. It takes a split second for me to find an opening before I lash out in an upward swing with my sword, eviscerating one hound. I follow through all the way with the strike, feeling a slight bit of resistance in the mutt's spine, but cleaving through it nonetheless.
That is perhaps one of the most rewarding sensations of hacking any vertebrate in half.
The other dog loses its head as it futilely bites the air, trying to get a desperate hit in.
I still hear heartbeats and breathing, and move around the room silencing the offending sounds. Just to make doubly sure the job is finished, I go to the large hound to check for vitals, when I notice a jewel embedded in its skull. Eagerly and impatiently, I tear its head off, and pry the jewel from its forehead. A key seems to be inside, and fortunately, seemingly in the appropriate shape for us to continue down to the lab.
The jewel is stubborn, however, and I spend a few seconds crushing the damn thing with my mind.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." I reply tersely. Shin walks off and checks on the others.
I hate it when this happens. But they'll know not to ask questions... at least to me. I help with the wounds that I can, and wait for everyone to regain their senses. As they get up, I go to open the door, when Lucia catches up to me.
I can see in his eyes that he's well aware what's going on. That's not too shocking, though... if his affiliations with Alundrians has anything to do with his training, he should know what he's dealing with.
"You would do well not to tell everyone. The implications would be very bad."
He nods. I think he at least understands from a professional point of view. That would have to do for now.
