Yeah. Did you see the finals of that tournament? Iyo is cool.
Was chatting with Justin and looked up some joysticks... the prices of joysticks just skyrocketed. Weeks ago, I saw sticks like the Hori EX2 for Xbox at 49.99, and now they're in the 60-70 range. I saw one of the SoulCalibur sticks go for over 100. Absolutely crazy. I only saw Buy.com and Amazon have them at a reasonable price. Ebay bids went out of control.

Get good at the XBox controller, then. Gamestop has a tournament this weekend. If you win, I think you get a better dpad and qualify for a regional tournament. Win the Regional tournament and you win a stick. Win the national and you get to go to Evo and an arcade cabinet.
Protip: I'm gonna assume you play Ken, because that's what you do. Find a knockdown, and play f+mk games. You walk forward and kick, kind of like Ky's 6K. Since you're on advantage (you can LINK c.mk off f+mk!), you can rip n00bs apart with this trick. I'll let a Ky player like yourself get creative off it.
One of two things will happen. People will mash a lot, and you can beat their moves with your frame advantage or DP. This becomes mindless and you can just take advantage of their ignorance. If they're smart enough to block, press f+rh to overhead them (or better, HOLD roundhouse and fake the step forward kick, and throw them).
Rinse and repeat.
Btw, last scrubby trick that doesn't work on experienced players, but will work against people who aren't complete mashers (i.e. they know how to hold back on a stick): Throw, then immediately start a level 3 focus attack. When the attack hits, dash cancel and throw again, or do your Ultra. Some people online dunno how to stop it and theres a decent amount of bitching over it.
If this happens to you, just uppercut them or use some other armor breaking move, or throw them out of it. Congrats, you now know how to make it past round 1 of the Gamestop tourney.

Already abusing the f.mk and that's just from dicking around. As far as the other stuff I know mp+mk does something fancy, not sure what it's called though, I noticed it goes through guard when it's "fully charged".
I have plans on saturday, can't tourney.

That's called a Focus Attack in the States, a Saving Attack in Japan, so if you see FADC or SADC, it's the dash cancel you can do while in that animation (you can dash forward upon hitting someone with it as well). It can absorb one non-low hit, including a fireball. If you tap it, it just throws the attack out. On counter hit, it'll put an opponent in a crumpled state for free hits. If you hold it long enough for a level two (you'll see a black outline form around your character, it'll put your opponent in a crumpled if it hits, regardless of what kind of hit. If you hold it all the way up to level three (usually around 60 some frames), it'll be unblockable.

For ken use standing strong -> fierce. Its a chain that gives you a LOT of time to hit confirm. On block just fireball, on hit you can srk or super. Even if you don't cancel the fierce into a special move, you're still relatively safe. It leaves you at -4 on block, +1 on hit.
Hella dumb, but doing cr.fwd xx super does more damage than standing strong, fierce xx super. And cr.fwd x strong srk xx super does like 10? more damage than just cr.fwd xx super.
EDIT: Oh yeah. Ken has a kara throw in the game that rivals Chun Li's from 3s. And its off of his f+mk.

Kara, Japanese for empty, is a cancel that has haunted us from the inception of Street Fighter.
You actually already know what a kara cancel is - you just don't know that you know, but I'll get to that example later. The first practical use of a kara cancel is to extend throw range back in SF2. What you do is you cancel the animation of a normal into a throw (hence an empty cancel; you cancel a "whiffed" attack). The effect, however, is that the throw inherits the normal's full range, which could effectively extend your grab's reach. If you've ever watched a video of a Japanese Zangief and said, "Good God, why is he able to grab from THAT range?", you're probably witnessing a kara'd SPD.
The example of a kara cancel that you should know of, Justin, is actually a roll cancel. Lo and behold, Capcom made the start of a roll cancellable into a special, and you know its effects. Incidentally, the Japs call it a kara roll cancel, while we just like to call them RC's and confuse Guilty Gear players.
Lastly, in Super Turbo, kara cancels allowed characters to combo supers because supers could not generally be cancelled or buffered from normals. Ken, for instance, did two low shorts, chained into a standing short, the startup of which was cancelled into his super. In other words, the startup of the normal was cancelled to link into a super.
There are other weird things that happen based on the idea of a kara cancel, like kattobi cancels, which are no longer important because we don't play Alpha.
So yeah, this kind of shit will make GameFAQ users' heads asplode.

Another example of a kara cancel is CVS2 where you would do a sweep -> fireball. But if you did the inputs too fast, you would see the start up of the sweep, but it would get canceled into the fireball (the sweep would never hit even if at point blank). In technical terms, you have to cancel the first move during the start up, ie before the active frames, with the second move.
In SF4, an easy example is Sagat's f+lk -> special move. For ease of execution, special move = tiger uppercut or tiger knee. The inputs would be hold forward, press lk, qcf either punch or kick. As long as you input the qcf+button before Sagat throws out his foot, you'll cancel into the special move (while moving hella far forward). This makes me laugh every time I use it on someone online. Normally full screen jumps are safe, except when your tiger uppercut goes 1/3 screen. Also really good when you can do this -> FADC, f+rh, ultra. Very lame.
Unfortunately, Ken's kara throw is difficult, in terms of timing. It actually feels a lot like Chun Li's kara throw in 3rd strike, not that that's helpful to anyone other than me. Something I thought of, but haven't tested yet is trying to kara cancel Ken's axe kick (f+hk, just like f+mk, except slower and hits overhead). I think there's a lot of start up frames on that move, so it should be a lot more lenient and overall better for kara cancel abuse.
On an unrelated note, hooray no Akuma teleport shenanigans. I unlocked Akuma because I had to test whether or not his teleport was CVS2 like. What I mean by that is it recovers instantly when you hit a corner. I feared bullshit corner teleport -> raging demon. But you can't do this in SF4, there's always recovery on his teleport from what I could see.

Regarding sticks (no homo), I've been looking around because not everyone is like me (in the sense that I prefer Japanese sticks over american). And there isn't a stick that you can put HAPP parts into that works for PS3. I found something surprising, cthulhu boards. Basically some guy on srk is selling custom circuit boards that remove the need to hack (solder) a dpad. It costs $40 assembled and each connection can be screwed down instead of soldered. I think the unassembled boards are around $31 (not sure on this number, need to recheck later). The assembled board comes w/ screw terminals, you can buy a board w/o screw terminals for less money. You might want to look into this if you want american parts on your stick. forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=162026

www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRh8xNTl4bANot a great SF4 video, but the ending is pretty amusing. The video is one of Darksydephil's recorded online matches, along with his banter in-game.

Why am I not surprised to find out that Kaqn settled on playing C.Viper? I found it hilarious b/c I told Jon yesterday that I was going to play C.Viper as my 2nd char in SF4, then when I went to look for videos I saw Kaqn playing a lot of Viper. The more I watch, the more I want to play her, though never online. Hella execution heavy.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMHc32ygldkNever, EVER leave your stick until you hear "K.O.!" This takes place at the Finals in Final Round XII, a major tourney that takes place in the Southeast. EDIT - There's about two minutes worth of crowd reaction. Keep watching until you see a black guy in a red shirt standing on a chair to try to calm the crowd. Read his shirt. Hilarity.
