Kassadin is a great anti-caster. Good ganker overall, but he doesn't really do a whole lot in team fights late game. He's a melee caster which is a neat concept but doesn't really work out that well in game. He can be a good character, but you will really need to be on the ball roaming the map and ganking for him to really be useful.
For support options, Janna is the superior support character right now. Sona nerfs hurt her a bit too much imo. Sona is still viable, but the power of her auras was greatly diminished.
Sona currently has a stronger early game. Good Sona's will abuse this advantage and have great early game harass due to her passive and Q. You farm up a decent chunk of money then generally grab duo auras (Aegis and Soul Shroud). Mid-late game you fall into a more passive role supporting the team. You have 1 good stun, 1 poke, 1 meager heal, and 1 minor speed buffl to contribute to team fights. Proper aura twisting is another thing you bring, generally buffing damage/defense and switching in speed when needed. Good management of your limited assets will determine how useful you are.
Janna has a slower early game but a stronger late game. As Janna you really want a strong AD carry to follow around and buff up. You build a standard support with survability, cdr, and some auras. AP isn't important on a support character since you're not doing that much damage anyways. CDR is very important so you can spam your support skills more often. Janna needs to be able to land her Q consistently so she is actually contributing to the fight. Quick tornadoes (for the knock up) rather than fully charged ones are your bread and butter. Save full charged ones for clearing minion waves late game. Her shield is equally important to add damage and help save team mates. And finally what separates good Jannas from crap ones is how you use her ult. Her ult is used to save the carry, reset a team fight, heal the party, and deny the enemy an escape route. Bad use of her ult will result in loss of life and kills for your team.
After seeing how he works, I really don't care much for Trundle. He is an interesting ganker, but I don't think he really brings that much to the fight.
Shen is probably the best tank in the game atm. A lot of how well Shen performs really depends on the player. Proper ults can win games. His aoe taunt is just rape. He's a decent laner with energy, his passive, and his Q. He does require some farm because his innate stats just aren't up to par for tanking. He can also jungle, but he really needs runes/masteries to be successful.
